ICIMOD also initiated the systematic mapping of glaciers and glacial lakes in the Himalayas using satellite images (Mool et al. 2001) which has been further improved and updated with a more comprehensive and systematic monitoring of the extent of ice and snow in the HKH region (Shrestha 2013).
