In the 1990s, realising a need for research and capacity building, ICIMOD introduced the mountain risk engineering programme. The included the adoption of the green road concept, landslide stabilisation, and reduction of physical vulnerabilities. ICIMOD also undertook a programme on landslide hazard management and control. A major focus was to train people at different levels in the field of landslide mitigation. As part of the participatory disaster management project, risk and vulnerability assessment and hazard mapping at community level was conducted in four districts of Nepal.
