Policies and practices for disaster risk management should be based on an understanding of disaster risk in all its dimensions.

PRAGATI (2017-2018)

With support from ECHO, PRAGATI brought VSO together with DCA and ADRA to build the capacity of local authorities and communities in the Kathmandu Valley on various aspects of disaster risk management and resilience building. Through technical support from embedded national volunteers, VSO led components focused on information management, ultimately establishing an open source-based risk assessment platform.

National Strategy for Resilient Urban Community (NSRUC)

The overall objective of this assignment was to formulate/develop NSRUC. The NSRUC supported urban resilient planning, development, implementation, and capacity development efforts of the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD) in the urban areas to face emerging climate and other disasters.

Strengthening the health sector response capacity of Ministry of Health and Population to respond to the humanitarian health needs in the event of mass casualty incidents in Kathmandu Valley (DIPECHO VIII) ECHO/World Health Organization, 2015-2016

enhance the response capacity of health authorities, health institutions and communities to provide medical services during and immediately after disasters, and strengthen health response systems to reduce preventable mortality, morbidity and disease associated with mass casualty incidents in Kathmandu Valley.

Urban WASH Preparedness and CBDRR & Urban Risk Management, 2011-2016, supported by DFID s

The programme aimed to reduce loss of life and human suffering following a major earthquake in Nepal through better preparedness and response in urban communities and the government institutions. The intervention was focused on WaSH, DRR and media outreach activity. Among the project’s objectives was to install emergency WASH infrastructure in the two IDP sites. Following this, the project moved to focusing on informing, educating and inspiring positive attitudes and behavioral change towards preparing for effective response during and after a disaster. ]

Strengthening Urban Resilience and Engagement (SURE)

The SURE program works in Seven Municipality (Kathmandu Metropolitan wards, Budanilkantha Municipality, Bhaktapur Municipality, Madhyapur Municipality, Godawari Municipality, Pokhara Metropolitan and Dhangadi Sub Metropolitan) across three of the major urban centers of Nepal. SURE, works with 4 Target Vulnerable Groups in each of the seven municipalities. Each of these target group have 30 Champions.

Safer City Surakshit Sahar

To mainstream DRR in their plan and program, preparation of school-based disaster management plans, preparation of health institutions to meet health needs in case of disaster, support schools to meet structural and non-structural vulnerabilities, prepositioning of emergency rescue tools and equipment.
