During Flagship 4's national level workshop held on 28 March 2013, Practical Action presented the idea of testing the early warning systems for floods from the community to national level. 

 An EWS conference was held in Kathmandu earlier in 2012. As a bi-product of this a “Best Practice” case study publication was compiled. Brief workshop notes can be also found in the document library. 

This booklet provides an overview of SEWIN Project’s activities and how these activities have helped the community to become resilient towards flood in the form of different case studies.

Practical Action has been working on community based EWS (early warning systems) in Nepal since 2002 - specifically on systems which give early warning of flood. As a result of its own learning, on-going community feedback, and “real time” evaluation, Practical Action has become convinced of a number of key issues.This publication summarises Practical Action’s learning in EWS and offers practical insight in to how such systems can be replicated and developed elsewhere.

This Practitioner's Handbook on Community Based Early Warning System is an effort to put together the early warning learning experiences from the field and communities in Nepal for wider uses for establishment of community based early warning Systems in flood prone areas of Nepal.
