Event Review of Nepal Flood Disaster 2014

ISET-International, ISET-Nepal and Practical Action collaborated to develop and refine an approach to post-event analysis that can be applied more broadly to build resilience and develop mechanisms to avoid loses due to disasters in the future, particularly at the scale of communities, urban areas, or rural regions.

Capacity building

Capacity building has been a priority for ICIMOD. ICIMOD is partnering with key international agencies and programmes to work together on international charter – “Space for major disasters” for disaster response with satellite-based data and information.

Community based flood early warning system

ICIMOD has been working with partners on Community based flood early warning system (CBFEWS) which is an integrated system of tools and plans managed by and for communities, providing real-time flood warnings to reduce flood risks.

Hazard assessment and monitoring

In the first decade, ICIMOD convened various studies on hydrological processes in the region. As a result, the first two occasional papers published in the 1980s focused on erosion and sedimentation processes and glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). ICIMOD has developed forest fire monitoring systems in Nepal and Bhutan, piloted community based early warning in India, Nepal and Afghanistan and developed tools and methods for multi-hazard risk assessment and mapping.

Disaster Risk Reduction Initiatives

The overall objective of DRR project is to reduce disaster risk and vulnerabilities for building environmentally safe and disaster resilient communities.

Building Disaster-Resilient Communities in Pokhara Sub-Municipality Project-BDRC (2012-2014)

The project was designed to address the gaps in disaster resilience. Over two years (April 2012 to March 2014). It had worked to increase the resilience of poor and vulnerable people, especially women, so that they would be able to mitigate, prepare for, effectively respond and overcome the impact of the multiple hazards to which they were exposed in PSMC. It aimed to build the capacity of communities
