Emergency Preparedness and Response & Early Recovery under the CDRMP

Emergency Preparedness and Response & Early Recovery under the CDRMP focuses on development of disaster response capacity at different levels in responding to disaster. The programme has supported development of National Disaster Response Framework, development of National Relief Standards and Guidelines (in progress), establishment of network of emergency operation centres across the country that as of now covers a total of 54 districts.

Forecast based emergency preparedness for climate risks (Activity 7 under strategic outcome 4)

Forecast-based Financing and Emergency Preparedness for Climate Risks (FbF) is an innovative mechanism to develop an anticipatory humanitarian system whereby early preparedness action is funded after a forecast is released, and before a disaster strike. FbF links the thresholds of forecast probabilities with appropriate preparedness actions, disburses required funding or logistics when the thresholds forecasts are issued, and activates standard operating procedure (SOP) that contain the mandate to act in such situations.

Disaster Management, Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

The primary focus of the project is to identify potential localized hazard through community based participatory assessment process. Subsequently the project support was extended to strengthen local capacity to avert the negative impact of disaster. Further, the project has been proactively supporting in enhancing local resilience through adaptation and mitigation measures. In addition to that, the project has also been supporting various schools in target areas in formulating School DRR plan and assistance in implementing the action plan.

Strengthening Flood Resilience in Kankai and Kamala River Basin in Nepal

The project is piloting multistage flood forecasting, monitoring, and communication for timely response in the end to end EWS. It is introducing advanced technologies: rainfall forecasting, real-time rainfall monitoring across the watershed and their thresholds, models for rainfall-to-flood forecasting and continuous flood risk monitoring at specified locations, and to issue messages among vulnerable communities for their necessary response actions. These technologies and approaches have helped increase lead-time and confidence level of authorities to flood forecasting.

Strengthening Action for Fostering Resilience (SAFER Nepal) ECHO, 2013-2015

enhance the resilience of communities through capacity building of local and national stakeholders, and implementation of a CBDRR approach agreed with Government of Nepal. For the implementation of the CBDRR approach, a high-level Technical Working Committee (TWC) was formed by the Government to review policies and guidelines related to Early Warning and Disaster Risk Reduction, and Oxfam was one of the members of TWC.

Community Action for Disaster Response (CADRE II)

CADRE II is a three-year (Nov 2016- Oct 2019) project built upon learning and work done during the CADRE I project, which ran from 2012 to 2015. Supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) with additional funding from the American Red Cross, this project being implemented by Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) aims to enhance community- based first responder capacity in 50 communities across five districts of Nepal (Makwanpur, Sarlahi, Baglung, Kailali and Doti).

Mahakali River Inclusive Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction

Kanchanpur district, Bhimdatta Municipality ward no. 9 and 10 and Mahakali Municipality ward no. 1,4,6,9 and 10. Dadeldhura district, Bhageshwar Rural Municipality ward no. 1 and Parshuram Municipality ward no. 4,5,6,7 and 12. The Mahakali River Inclusive Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction Project is a two-year (July 2017-June 2019) project implemented by Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) with the support from American Red Cross.
