Community Based Flood and GLOF Risk Reduction Project

Community Based Flood and GLOF Risk Reduction Project, 2013-2017 was another project implemented by UNDP, a joint undertaking of the Government of Nepal, Global Environment Facility (GEF) and UNDP. The project objective was to reduce human and material losses from Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in Solukhumbu district and catastrophic flooding events in the Terai and Churia Range.

Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme (CDRMP)

The Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme (CRDMP) aims to Strengthen the overall system of DRM in Nepal through policy reforms, risk management, community-based DRM including climate risk management, promoting seismic resilience, and emergency preparedness and early recovery. The programme enhances partnerships with Government, NGOs, academia, private sector and civil society and expands the institutional and knowledge base of DRM, also contributes in establishing strategic linkages between DRM and development sectors.

National DRR Policy, Institutional and Capacity building

National DRR Policy, Institutional and Capacity building component under the CDRMP focuses on two aspects: i) support the GoN in formulating and implementing policy and legal frameworks in coordination with the concerned government and non-government institutions; and ii) focus on enhancing government officials and other stakeholders’ capacities including of NGOs, private sectors and local communities.

Community Based Disaster and Climate Risk Management

Community Based Disaster and Climate Risk Management component focuses on community-based DRM initiatives in the selected districts that cover all three ecological regions of Nepal. Multi-hazards Risk and Vulnerability based Integrated Watershed Management Planning of selected sub watersheds of Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Rukum, Kaski, Sunsari, Mahottari, Chitwan, Surkhet, Bara and Nawalparasi have been prepared and Multi hazard risk assessment tool/methodology have been drafted.

Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction Project:

WVIN has been implementing Disaster Risk Reduction Project in 11 districts (except Sarlahi among its working districts) since 2017 with the aim to ensure communities are more resilient to disasters. Through the project which will run until 2020 and in collaboration with local government and partner NGOs, WVIN is supporting local government and stakeholders in developing, reviewing and implementing local disaster and climate resilience plan in 183 wards of 44 municipalities.

Nepal Urban Resilience Programme (2019-2024)

The Nepal Urban Resilience Programme (NURP) is a 5-year programme funded by DFID (2019-2024) to support national and local government in strengthening the resilience of growing urban areas to natural disasters through improved building, planning and services. VSO is a member of the consortium led by ICF, and focuses on gender and social inclusion, DRM and local governance capacity support.

Scaling-up Early Warning Systems in Nepal (SEWIN)

Practical Action Nepal implemented SEWIN in Banke and Bardiya District and then extended and scaled up to Chitwan and Nawalparari Districts in the course of time. Practical Action promoted community-based disaster risk reduction programmes to reduce disaster risk of the most vulnerable communities in flood-prone districts. The specific objective was to strengthen the capacity of vulnerable flood-prone communities and district authorities in Nepal to understand, mitigate and respond to risk, and benefit through the use of flood EWS.

Building Back Better, Institutionalizing and Strengthening WASH Sector for Urban Resilience (BISWASH)

This project aims to strengthen capacity of stakeholders in creating disaster resilient Panauti Municipality with a focus on WASH and support for replication of good practices in all municipalities within Kavrepalanchowk District. Practical Action is working with the local people and Disaster Management Committees (DMCs) from community to municipality and district stakeholders for the integration of DRR (both for preparedness and response) with focus on urban WASH into their policy, plans and programmes backed with effective monitoring mechanisms.
